Dr. Shawn Robinson – UCF

Florida Iota (Central Florida)  Phi Dr. Shawn Robinson is the Hillsborough Community College Ybor City Campus president and recently received the 2014 Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction.

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year college students. The purpose of PTK is to recognize and encourage scholarship among members. PTK provides opportunities for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence. Hillsborough Community College serves more than 46,000 students annually on five campuses and three centers throughout Hillsborough County.

“As an advisor with PTK since 1997, I am honor to be receiving this prestigious award,” said Dr. Robinson. “From presenting at PTK workshops to helping coordinate a Florida regional convention, PTK has been an essential part of my career.”

College presidents and campus CEOs are selected for this award on the basis of outstanding efforts given toward promoting the goals of Phi Theta Kappa. Award recipients should have served as president at least five years at the current institution and demonstrate a strong level of support for PTK. Prior to this recognition, Phi Theta Kappa has recognized Dr. Robinson at the state and international levels as a chapter advisor.

Dr. Robinson has served as the Ybor City Campus President since September 2007. He actively promotes open communication about key issues that impact the functioning of the college/campus from teaching methodologies and the use of learning technologies to procedure and policy changes that enhance student learning and collaborative campus governance. Dr. Robinson is currently serving as a board member of the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce, Ybor City Development Corporation, Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County, and Tampa Historic Streetcar Board of Directors. Additionally, Dr. Robinson is a member of the Florida A & M University College of Law Board of Visitors, NextGen Alliance Board of Directors, and the Tampa Kiwanis Club Foundation Board of Directors as President-Elect. Robinson joined Phi Delta Theta’s Florida Iota Chapter in 1988 where he served as Service Chair, Rush Chair, IFC Secretary, and IFC Rush Vice President. He has served on the Florida Iota Housing Corporation Board as Secretary since 1999.

Robinson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Education, a Master of Education degree in Mathematics Education and a Doctor of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Central Florida.
