Members of the Missouri Alpha Colony at the University of Missouri created a GoFundMe campaign for an MU dining worker that ended up reaching more people than they ever would have imagined.

Phis Ben Schnelle, Chase O’Neal, Joe Davis and Zack Reader started the campaign for MU Campus Dining Services worker Sandy Cunningham, who is known locally as “Sandy from Plaza.” They asked Sandy, who greets students as they walk into Plaza 900 Dining Hall on daily basis, what she would like for Christmas.

Sandy replied by saying she would like to give presents to her grandchildren.

The GoFundMe page was created on Dec. 1 with an initial goal of $500. Within less than an hour, the goal was surpassed. Within its first day, the fundraiser raised over $4,000.

Schnelle and the friends who helped him coordinate the campaign told Sandy about the collective fundraising effort and she was beyond surprised. Continuing her selfless character, Sandy decided to donate all the money raised by the fundraiser to charity. She chose to give the donations to MizzouThon, an organization that supports the local MU Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
