Pursuit of Greatness
Charles Scherer – Tampa

Charles F. Scherer, C.P.M., serves as the Regional Executive Director for Children’s Home Society of Florida (CHS), leading the bold direction to end the need for foster care as we know it.

Brother Scherer is a 2002 graduate of The University of Tampa where he served as Risk Manager and Treasurer of the Florida Theta Chapter.

With a career built on integrity and a strong work ethic, Scherer’s commitment and passion began in public service nearly two decades ago while working with the United States Department of Justice’s Executive Office of The United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida. He was a Legislative Intern on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. for a United States Congressman from Florida and completed an internship with the Human Rights Campaign, a national nonprofit organization, in conjunction with a United States Senator’s re-election campaign.

Scherer was later appointed as Director of Field Operations and Campaign Treasurer for a candidate running for the United States Senate from Florida. He began his career with the State of Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) in 2004 as a certified Child Protective Investigator and was promoted through the ranks to statewide leadership during his 15-year tenure. Scherer served as Operations Manager for the DCF Assistant Secretary for Operations/Deputy Secretary and was appointed as the statewide Deputy Director for the Florida Abuse Hotline Command Center where he served until 2015. Scherer then joined DCF’s Southern Region leadership team as the Regional Operations Manager for child protective investigations. A year later he was appointed as the Director of Family Safety and Community Services leading the Region’s child protective investigations, adult protective investigations/services, child care regulations, and the family safety program office teams overseeing a multimillion dollar annual budget. Scherer also served as DCF Acting Regional Managing Director when delegated, overseeing all DCF operations for the Southern Region. In October 2019 Scherer joined the statewide nonprofit organization, Children’s Home Society of Florida, as Regional Executive Director in South Florida leading CHS’ mission of building bridges to success for children and CHS’ vision of creating a world where children realize their full potential.

Scherer shares that Phi Delta Theta and The University of Tampa gave him the platform to be a part of these outstanding organizations and provide invaluable services within the community.

Scherer has served as a lead member of the DCF statewide Critical Incident Rapid Response Team (CIRRT), served as a subject matter expert on the statewide Child Abuse Death Review Team, and was a Florida delegate on human trafficking in New York City. Scherer has received special recognition from the Miami-Dade County Office of the Mayor and Board of County Commissioners in appreciation and recognition of his valuable contributions to the community. He was awarded with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for outstanding and invaluable service to the community and received the honor of the DCF Southern Region’s Family Safety Leadership award. Additionally in May of 2020, Scherer was recognized as The University of Tampa’s Alumni Spartan Spotlight.

Scherer earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Tampa in Government and World Affairs with a minor in Law and Justice and is a graduate of the Washington Center’s Congressional Leadership program in Washington, D.C. Additionally, Scherer is a graduate of Florida State University’s Certified Public Manager graduate certificate program.
