First-Generation Scholarship Applications are due First-Generation Scholarship Applications are due January 31!

Phi Delta Theta defines first-generation students as those whose parent(s)/guardian(s) did not complete a four-year college degree. Our goal is to directly impact the financial hardship of first-generation college students, indirectly lower the economic burden of membership into Phi Delta Theta, and assist Phi Delta Theta chapters in becoming more representative on its campuses.

First-generation students initiated between July 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023, with a college GPA, are eligible and should apply to be considered.

If you apply before January 31, 2023, your application will be considered for the Winter (February) 2023 award period.

To apply for scholarships, members of Phi Delta Theta can visit their myPhiDelt account. Questions can be sent to Bonnie Schiller at bschiller@phideltatheta.org.

Leading Meat Church has provided a lot of cool opportunities for myself and my family, but never in a million years did I think I’d be on the cover of our fraternity magazine. Joining @phideltatheta has led to a lifetime of amazing friends. opportunities and memories. I just wish our chapter advisor Roy Anderson was still around to be able to see this because he would have been so proud.

Thank you to @phideltatheta for this super cool opportunity. Proud to be a Phi!

In the centennial edition of The Scroll, Scroll Editor Bill Dean, Texas Tech ’61, summarized the importance of our Fraternity’s publication: “It has provided the mechanism for communication and understanding through the past 100 years. It has been part of that quality of leadership.

Nine former editors of The Scroll have served on the General Council. Six of these have been president.

The Scroll has weathered many storms. It has seen the Fraternity through five wars, a depression, a struggle for civil rights and civil liberties as well as major social and economic change.

Editors have come and gone. The format has undergone numerous changes. But The Scroll continues today, as in the past, to be a very vital part of Phi Delta Theta.”

Many of our brothers participated in service oppor Many of our brothers participated in service opportunities this week in honor of MLK Day ⚔️

Brother Ryan Breyta, Montclair '23, shared what serving meant to him.
“I definitely saw that Dr. King’s message about service was right, ‘You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.’ That’s what makes serving others special. Dr. King will forever be a man who fought for change and impacted the world around us. Although we are not quite where we want to be in regard to Dr. King’s vision for the world, we must continue the fight and legacy that he started day in and day out – not just on his day of remembrance.” https://phide.lt/mlkdayofservice23

During 1894–95, the first issue of The Palladium, containing 32 pages, was published.

Established by the Convention of 1894, The Palladium proved to be a valuable medium for disseminating within the Fraternity information that it would be unwise to publish without sub rosa restrictions. The four numbers of Volume I are dated November 1894, January, March, and May 1895, each having eight pages of the same size as those of The Scroll. The following appears in the second number:

“It is not intended that every active member of the chapters shall be supplied with a copy of each issue of The Palladium. A sufficient number to supply the officers and a few additional are sent to each Reporter, and this number is supposed to be sufficient to keep the members informed as to its contents. It was the intent of the Convention, and the General Council has so ordered, that it shall be the duty of the Reporter, at the first regular meeting after receipt, to read the entire contents of The Palladium to the chapter then in session.”

[Frank J. R. Mitchell Scroll Endowment Fund Create [Frank J. R. Mitchell Scroll Endowment Fund Created] #PhiDeltaTheta175

In November 1908, at the 29th Pittsburgh Convention, Scroll Editor and Manager Frank J. R. Mitchell suggested the Scroll Endowment Fund, a plan for life subscriptions that would, in time, provide adequate support for the magazine.

Unfortunately, the contributions to the Mitchell Fund stopped in 1981 due to a change in the tax code. As a result, this fund was insufficient to continually support the publishing and mailing of printed The Scroll in perpetuity. Therefore, the decision was made to change the delivery method of the lifetime subscription to electronic. A digital version also reduced the Fraternity’s overall use of paper and helped address the ever-rising production, printing, and postage costs. Now funds from the Mitchell Fund and the True Blue Society support The Scroll, The Scroll Archive, The Scroll Extra, and expenses related to communications and alumni relations. You can view the digital version of the Winter 2023 issue of The Scroll on our website.

[Chapter Reports in The Scroll] #PhiDeltaTheta175 [Chapter Reports in The Scroll] #PhiDeltaTheta175

George B. Thomas was editor of The Scroll in February 1883, when he announced that for the very first time, the magazine contained reports from every chapter of Phi Delta Theta. It took a lot of hard work to accomplish this feat, including reaching out to some of the chapters multiple times. The Scroll had communications from forty-three active chapters and nine alumni chapters, which was a larger number than any other fraternity had at that time.

This achievement peaked envy from Beta Theta Pi, who in their own publication, bet that Phi Delt could not repeat this success. However, the next issue of The Scroll once again contained letters, or telegrams, from every single chapter. phide.lt/3CNPLIl

As a boy, George Banta and his brother Charles had printed a small family newspaper using type picked up from the refuse of a local printing shop. Their paper had a short name, the SUN because they had only a few letters of bold-face type. Soon they bought a hand press, then a foot press, first installed in the family dining room but moved to the woodshed when they acquired a small steam engine. When the boiler blew up, George Banta went back to the craftsmanship of hand printing, an avocation he never outgrew.

Years later, when he gave up the insurance business. Banta saw the need for a printing company adapted to college business in the Midwest. At Menasha, he created The Collegiate Press of the George Banta Publishing Company.

In February 1904, the first issue of The Scroll was published by George Banta Publishing Company. The Scroll was continuously published by the George Banta Publishing Company until the early 1990s.

The song’s air is to the tune of “Benny Havens O!” The original song has six verses and two choruses, and copies of this song were printed and distributed.
