David A. Reingold

Chancellor of Indiana University

David A. Reingold serves as chancellor of Indiana University Bloomington, leading the university’s flagship campus with a commitment to student success, academic excellence, research innovation, and civic engagement. Reingold was initiated into Phi Delta Theta Fraternity during his time at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he earned his bachelor of arts in sociology in 1990.

A sociologist and professor of public policy in the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Reingold brings decades of experience in higher education administration, public policy, and faculty development. Prior to his current role, he served for a decade as dean of liberal arts at Purdue University, where he became the longest-serving liberal arts and sciences dean in the Big Ten. During his tenure, he pioneered Cornerstone, a widely recognized general education program that has since been replicated by more than 60 institutions. He also led campus efforts around civic literacy and freedom of inquiry and expression, and served as senior vice president with responsibilities that included initiatives in Washington, D.C.

In his prior service at Indiana University, Reingold held senior leadership roles at the O’Neill School, including executive associate dean and professor, where he played a key role in advancing the school to top national rankings. His work focused on elevating faculty research, strengthening graduate education, and launching nationally recognized initiatives to enhance undergraduate learning.

An expert in urban poverty, economic development, social welfare policy, low-income housing policy, civil society, and government performance, Reingold’s research has been published in a number of leading journals. He has served on editorial boards and advisory panels for national organizations and federal agencies. His public service includes work with the US Corporation for National and Community Service and the White House Task Force for Disadvantaged Youth. He is a founding director of the Community Investment Fund of Indiana, a statewide community development financial institution.

A Chicago native and nearly 30-year resident of Indiana, Reingold holds a bachelor of arts in sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a master’s and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago. He and his wife, Dr. Lynn Hooker, associate professor of music, are proud to call Bloomington home along with their two children.
