Dr. Edward G. Whipple

About Ed

Dr. Edward G. Whipple was initiated into Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at Hanover College on March 28, 1971. After two years at Hanover, he studied abroad with a concentration on the French language. He also attended Willamette University, and pursued graduate studies at Northwestern University, and later received his doctorate at Oregon State University. After serving Phi Delta Theta as Scholarship Commissioner from 1984 to 1988, he was elected to the General Council. He served the Fraternity as General Council Reporter and General Council Treasurer, and was later elected the 54th President of the General Council in 1992.

Dr. Whipple received the Legion of Honor Award at the 2008 Biennial Convention. He joined the Foundation Board of Trustees in 2010.

His experience in the world of education is truly expansive, and includes: Ph.D Program – Oregon State University (1980-1981), Greek Affairs Coordinator – Iowa State University (1981-1982), Assistant Professor of Education and member of Graduate Faculty, Associate Dean of Students – Texas Tech University (1982-1985), Dean of Students/Director of Student Life and English Instructor – The University of Alabama (1985-1989), Associate Professor of Educational Foundations/Vice President for Student Affairs – Eastern Montana College (1989-1994).

His many professional affiliations include: Order of Omega President (1986-Present), Association of Fraternity Advisers (1981-Present), Texas Association of College and Student Personnel Administrators, Northwest College Personnel Association (1989-1994, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (1981-Present – Currently President of Foundation Board of Directors), National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (1994-Present), Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (1993-Present), Ohio Association of Student Personnel Administrators (1994-Present), Recipient of the Order of Fraternity Excellence Award by the Fraternity Executives Association.

His academic and leadership honoraries include: Alpha Lambda Delta, Blue Key, Cardinal Key, Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa, and Phi Eta Sigma. Whipple is the author of numerous articles and publications in the world of higher education and the Greek community. His research on the effects of Phi Delta Theta’s alcohol-free housing policy, after its initial five years of existence, shed much light on the progress being made in this extremely important aspect of Greek life.

In 2012, Keeling & Associates (a New York City based comprehensive higher education consulting firm) welcomed Dr. Edward G. Whipple as a senior consultant to oversee our portfolio of services in working with colleges, universities, and associations. Dr. Whipple offers rich experience in higher education, including most recently a one year term as Senior Fellow at NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, 17 years of service to Bowling Green State University as Vice President for Student Affairs, and five years as Vice President for Student Affairs at Eastern Montana College (now Montana State University-Billings). Dr. Whipple’s career includes both Student Affairs administration and teaching. He diversified K&A service offerings and increase its strength in helping institutions deliver change for learning by focusing on consultative support for Greek-letter Organizations and Intercollegiate Athletics.

Ed Whipple is currently Vice President for Campus Life at Willamette University. Being a fourth-generation Oregonian he returned to the Pacific Northwest to take the role as VP for Campus Life. A South Salem High School grad, Whipple says his liberal arts education at Willamette shaped his values and influenced his approach to teaching, leading and building community. He resides in with his wife, Cindy, and son, John in Salem, Oregon.
