Southwestern University President Edward Burger announced that Dr. Timothy B. Boone ’77 will speak at the 2019 commencement ceremony on May 11, 2019 in the Corbin J. Robertson Center.

Born in Dallas, TX, Timothy B. Boone, M.D., Ph.D., graduated from Southwestern University in 1977 with a bachelor of science in biology. He earned his master’s degree in physiology and a doctorate in neuroscience at the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston. He completed his medical training at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and his urology residency training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. In 1991, he joined the faculty in the Department of Urology at the University of Texas Southwestern for two years before moving to Baylor College of Medicine, where he joined the Scott Department of Urology. In 2000, Dr. Boone was named professor and chair of the Scott Department of Urology, where he served until 2008. For more than 20 years, he has actively participated in the care of spinal cord–injured veterans with neurogenic bladder dysfunction at the VA Spinal Cord Injury Unit in Dallas and in Houston.

Today, he serves as a professor and the chair of the Urology Department at the Houston Methodist Hospital and Research Institute as well as the director of its Education Institute. Houston Methodist Hospital is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the number 1 hospital in Texas for patient care.

Dr. Boone specializes in the treatment of patients with problems associated with neurologic issues arising from spinal-cord injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and other diseases. He maintains active participation in research, focusing on mechanisms of sensory control and dysfunction. Dr. Boone is also the primary investigator for the Neuroregeneration and Bladder Sensory Science Laboratory at the Houston Methodist Research Institute.

Throughout his career, Dr. Boone has written more than 100 research publications and given hundreds of lectures nationally while serving as a visiting professor for many departments of urology. He is an active member of several medical and professional associations, and he serves as a consultant reviewer for numerous scientific journals, including the Journal of Urology, the British Journal of Urology, and the New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Boone has earned a number of awards and honors—including the Presidential Award from the Texas Urological Society and the Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology—and he has been listed in America’s Top Doctors, a publication by Castle Connolly Medical.

Not only is Dr. Boone a distinguished doctor and professor, but he is also a valued member of the Southwestern community. President Burger comments that Dr. Boone exemplifies the Southwestern spirit with his “dedication to lifting up human lives, his commitment to teaching and learning, and his efforts to make individuals better and healthier versions of themselves.”

Dr. Boone actively enhances the Southwestern Experience in many ways, including mentoring current students as well as providing valuable, prestigious research internship opportunities at Houston Methodist Hospital. The campus was also the beneficiary of his leadership through his role as chair of our Science Center Advisory Council when the University was planning the first phase of the new Fondren–Jones Science Center.
