Grant Geist (Mercer ‘13) always knew he wanted to make a difference and joining the Peace Corps after graduating seemed to be an excellent way to start. At 23, Brother Geist is building agriculture capacity in Mozambique.
Living in a reed house with a metal roof, Grant is working with chief agronomist at the Inhamussua Institute of Agriculture to train students on how to transition from subsistence farming to small-scale commercial farming. Right now, Grant is building and installing one of the first agricultural laboratories and drip irrigation systems in Mozambique. In addition, Grant is working with NGOs to train well-drillers, pump-makers, and partnering with micro-finance and agriculture supply companies to improve the lives of Mozambicans by increasing food security and income.
Grant also teaches agriculture to new Peace Corps volunteers, and he is working with Peace Corps Mozambique staff and other volunteers to set up an agricultural task force with the purpose of introducing new technologies, crops and farming techniques.
Brother Geist is a Georgia Gamma Phi and a 2013 graduate of the College of Liberal Arts at Mercer University. He graduated with a bachelors of science in chemistry.
