John Sellers, Texas Tech ’04, is co-chief executive officer of Double Eagle Energy Holdings III LLC, a partnership formed with Apollo Global Management and co-founder of Double Eagle Development.
In early 2021, Brother Sellers named a $1 million scholarship endowment after a respected Economics professor, friend, and mentor, Professor Rashid B. Al-Hmoud. The scholarship will provide $45,000 of annual scholarship support for undergraduate and graduate students in the department.
While majoring in economics at Texas Tech University, Sellers teamed up with Cody C. Campbell to form a successful real estate development firm that was responsible for several residential and commercial projects in Texas and Kansas. In addition to his real estate and oil and gas pursuits, Sellers has been involved in a fourth-generation, family-owned cattle business. Working long days beside his brother, father and grandfather overseeing the ranch operations and traveling to make deals across the region and state, was foundational for Sellers.
While at Tech, childhood friends Sellers and Campbell shared a passion for business, searching for and capitalizing on deals, and disrupting industries. Their first venture was a real estate business in Lubbock.
Sellers purchased some rental homes across the city to lease back to his classmates and friends. Meanwhile, the pair forged connections across the area, raised additional capital, and leaned on the insight of their economics professor, and friend Al-Hmoud.
Sellers, noted for his instinct for raising capital and vision for opportunity grew the business organically. In 2004, nearing his college graduation, Sellers and his partners connected with a landowner eager to sell 220 acres near Milwaukee Avenue and 34th Street in Lubbock.
After two years of securing and completing infrastructure, Sellers’ team sold the development, as well as adjacent undeveloped land to a prominent homebuilder in Lubbock.
In the 2008 economic downturn, Sellers and Campbell exited the real estate business. Taking what they learned together about the industry, they set their sights on the Permian Basin and formed Double Eagle Holdings, an oil and natural gas exploration venture that focused on acquiring and packaging strategic acreage.
From a Texas Tech article, author says “Sellers has built a legacy of remarkable business success, co-founding and growing Double Eagle Holdings into one of the most successful oil and gas exploration and development companies in the world. The company’s subsidiaries, Double Eagle and DoublePoint, have sold to industry partners for a combined $9.2 billion since 2017 under the management of Sellers and his business partner and co-founder Cody Campbell, currently a Texas Tech University System regent.
Today Sellers is growing something with a uniquely different impact. A legacy at his alma mater to honor a respected professor who left a lasting impression and helped shape the sharp minds of both Sellers and Campbell during their economics study at Tech.
Sellers lives in Fort Worth with his wife and three children.
