The Legion of Honor Award was established in 1978 to recognize a member of Phi Delta Theta who has made a major contribution of his time, effort, and energy to serve the Fraternity and improve its stature; has distinguished himself in representing the Fraternity’s principles of friendship, sound learning and rectitude; is widely recognized as a leader of fraternity men and identified with the promotion of fraternities; and has widely advanced and enlarged the opportunities for growth and leadership among college men through fraternities.
Kenneth M. “Kenny” Jastrow, II was initiated into the Texas Beta Chapter at the University of Texas at Austin on March 26, 1966. He earned his BBA in 1969 and MBA in 1971 from the University of Texas.
Brother Jastrow served as Chairman and CEO of Temple-Inland Inc., a Fortune 500 company with interests in paper, forest products, real estate, and financial services, from 2000 to 2007, and worked at Temple-Inland for over 27 years. He served as President and Chief Operating Officer in 1998 and 1999, Group Vice President from 1995 until 1998, and Chief Financial Officer of Temple-Inland from November 1991 until 1998.
Brother Jastrow is Non-Executive Chairman of Forestar Group, Inc., and serves as a Director of KB Home and MGIC Investment Corporation. He is past Chairman of Texas Taxpayers Research Association and Texas Mortgage Bankers Association. In 2007 Kenny was awarded the Mirabeau B. Lamar Medal presented by the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities. In addition, he received the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association Distinguished Service Award and Boy Scouts of America (Midland, Texas) Distinguished Citizen Award.
At The University of Texas, Brother Jastrow served as Chairman of the following: Development Board, Advisory Council of the McCombs School of Business, and Neighborhood Longhorns, and also served as Chair of the Commission of 125. He also served as Chairman of the University of Texas Capital Campaign that successfully raised $3 billion dollars. In 2004 Kenny was named a Distinguished Alumnus of The University of Texas, and he was inducted into the McCombs School of Business Hall of Fame, 2003.
Brother Jastrow has been tremendously generous to the Phi Delta Theta Foundation, and also served as a Foundation Trustee from 2009 to 2014.
Kenny and his wife, Susan Thomas Jastrow, have three children, all of whom are married: Marty and J. McCartt; Kenny and Kendal Jastrow; and Corby and Stephanie Jastrow; and have also been blessed with several grandchildren. Kenny and Susie reside on a ranch outside Austin in the Hill Country of Texas.
