Scott Stanzel – Iowa State

Scott Stanzel, Iowa State ’95, joins Truist Financial Corporation as their new executive vice president and chief communications officer. He will lead the bank’s corporate communications function, overseeing internal and external communications from the bank’s headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. Stanzel’s new position will begin on October 1, 2022, after five years at Capital One Financial Corporation, where he served as managing vice president for corporate communications.

Stanzel earned a BA in journalism and public relations at Iowa State University in 1995. During this time, he served as president of the Iowa Gamma Chapter of Phi Delta Theta. Stanzel has decades of experience in corporate communications. He previously worked with companies such as Microsoft and Amazon. Stanzel also served as deputy White House press secretary during the George W. Bush administration. He managed media relations strategy and served as a spokesman for President George W. Bush, and developed and delivered official White House responses to breaking news stories.

“Scott is a forward-thinking, compelling leader with an extensive banking, technology, and public sector background. His experience and insights will immediately help Truist even more constructively and impactfully engage our numerous stakeholders,” said Ellen Fitzsimmons, chief legal officer and head of public affairs.

Truist is a top ten US commercial bank with total assets of $545 billion as of June 30, 2022. The company offers a wide range of services including retail, small business, and commercial banking; asset management; capital markets; commercial real estate; corporate and institutional banking; insurance; mortgage; payments; specialized lending; and wealth management.

“I am honored to join Truist and lead a growing communications team that provides confidence to our clients and inspiration to our teammates at a time of transformational change in the industry and economy,” said Stanzel.
