On Sunday, April 27, 2014, the University of Maryland’s Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life (DFSL) inducted the first group of Greek alumni from every fraternity and sorority chapter that existed on the campus over the past 100 years into their newly formed Greek hall of fame, The Centennial Honor Roll. DFSL thought it was important to recognize their Greek members that had made time, physical and/or financial contributions to their Maryland chapter or the University of Maryland’s Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life community; elevated fraternity and sorority life on a chapter or community level; or any combination of these achievements.
The Maryland Alpha Chapter of Phi Delta Theta was proud to have the following ten (10) brothers inducted into the Centennial Honor Roll:
Robert “Fitz” Fitzpatrick ’58
Brother Fitzpatrick had a successful business career with Fannie Mae Corporation retiring as Senior Vice President of Administration. Fitz was a major supporter of the University of Maryland Terrapin Athletics and was known around campus for over five decades.
Contributions to Chapter: Chapter President, Chapter Advisor, House Corporation President and Member, Province President Gamma South of Phi Delta Theta, General Fraternity Warden and Member of the Maryland Alpha Hall of Fame.
Marvin J. Perry ’53
Marvin J. Perry was the youngest of 11 children from Burlington Iowa. He came to the University of Maryland on the GI Bill after serving in the US Army in Germany. He was initiated as a Phi on November 20, 1949 and graduated with a degree in Economics in 1953. As an entrepreneur he made a name for himself in the wholesale furniture business; helping develop an overseas furnishings program with the US State Department. He married Carol Shuck and raised three daughters in Potomac Maryland. His brother-in-law, Robert Shuck, was also a Maryland Alpha, 1957. His youngest daughter, Jodi Perry Yeager, graduated from Miami University in 1990 as a Kappa Kappa Gamma. His hobbies besides Phi Delta Theta and the University of Maryland Athletics included his business, family (including 11 grandchildren) golf, fishing, telling jokes and collecting coins. He was also an active member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Potomac Maryland and enjoyed volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in Key Largo Florida.
Contributions to Chapter: IFC President, Served as first Phi Delta Theta traveling Field Secretary, Served numerous roles for the General Fraternity including Province President, Alumni Commissioner for the Northeast Region, Educational Foundation Trustee, Chairman of the Foundation’s Major Gifts Committee for the Living Bond Campaign and in 2000 received the Phi Delta Theta’s Legion of Merit, Known for his passion for Maryland Athletics, A devoted Terrapin Club and Fastbreakers member, serving terms as President of both, Founding member of the Maryland basketball booster program, FOG (Friends of Gary), In 2005 received the University of Maryland Alumni Association’s Tyser Gottwals Award for his service to the University and a Member of the Maryland Alpha Hall of Fame.
Bob “Turtle” Smith ’63
Brother Smith is married to Carol B. Smith and has two sons and a granddaughter. Bob had a successful business career which included being VP to two Fortune 50 companies before founding and managing Smith Properties, a commercial real estate company based in Frederick and Garrett Counties. Smith is a current member of the University of Maryland Board of Trustees and was a former member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the Robert H. Smith Business School. He is a current member of the “M” Club, Terrapin Club, Comcast Building Partners, and the Heritage Society. Smith was also a former member of the Athletics Department’s search committee for football, basketball, and baseball. He is a Director Level Scholarship Donor to the University and as a member of the baseball team as an undergraduate and co-captain his senior year, Smith was proud to fully endow the first ever Maryland Baseball Scholarship. Smith has had the Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium on campus dedicated in his honor.
Contributions to the Chapter: Chapter Treasurer for Harvard Trophy-winning chapter, House Corporation Member for over 8 years, Assisted with revision of the monetary and management policies for the house, Helped to implement the alcohol-free housing initiative for the chapter, Endowed the Robert W. & Carol B. Smith Scholarship Fund for Phi Delta Theta and a Member of the Maryland Alpha Hall of Fame.
P. Douglas Dollenberg ’61
Brother Dollenberg is the President and CEO of Nottingham Properties, Inc. and its real estate development affiliates. He led the development of Nottingham’s successful master-planned billion dollar community – the 2,000 acre White Marsh Town Center in Baltimore County. He is a Registered Professional Engineer with a BSCE from the University of Maryland and an MSCE from Purdue University. He is a Trustee of the UMCP Foundation and serves on the Board of Visitors for the UM Clark School of Engineering. He also serves on the Board of Visitors of Towson University and numerous other civic and charitable boards.
Contributions to the Chapter: Chaired the construction phase of the renovation of the Phi Delta Theta house in 1994 and a Member of the Maryland Alpha Hall of Fame.
Kenn Roberts ’60
Brother Roberts worked for Ford Motor Company and General Electric before venturing into a successful career in real estate in the Washington and Maryland Suburb area for twenty years. Upon his retirement in 1988, Mr. Roberts formed The M.U.S.E. Foundation, which produces major concerts for charity. Mr. Roberts continues to pursue his passion for music, playing in his bluegrass band, The Hard Travelers, on a regular basis. The band got its start with fellow Phi, Brother Renfro, in the basement of Maryland Alpha in 1958. Kenn has two sons who are also in the Greek Community at other schools.
Contributions to the Chapter: Chapter Treasurer, Director and member of the Phi Delt chorus who won the IFC Sing four consecutive years, Chairman for Fundraising Committee for 1994 house renovations and House Corporation Member.
Durke Thompson ’64
Brother Thompson graduated with a J.D. Law from the University of Wisconsin. He practiced law at Pasternak, Thompson & Fidis in Bethesda, Maryland from 1968-1994, Judge of the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, Maryland 1994-2011 (active) 2011-present (senior status), Married Lea H. Thompson, children: Laetitia, Katrina and Tenley, President of Montgomery County Bar Association 1983-84, Board of Directors, Maryland State Bar Association, 5 terms, three of which on Executive Committee. Member, U.S. Army National Guard, Company A, 19th Special Forces Group 1967-72.
Contributions to the Chapter: Executive Committee and Secretary 1963-64, Chapter Advisor 1968-1976, National Chapter Adviser of the Year 1974, Province President Gamma South of Phi Delta Theta 1974-76, House Corporation Member and a Member of the Maryland Alpha Hall of Fame.
Robert “Bob” A. Gale ’63
Brother Gale studied Industrial Technology at Maryland – Bachelor of Science; Worked for Armco Steel as Industrial Engineer after graduating for 2 years, President of 3 trade associations for 30 years, Owner of a residential construction company specializing in home additions for 10 years, Married with 2 daughters, 2 step sons and 9 grandchildren
Contributions to Chapter: Member of Inter Fraternity Sing Phi Delt chorus, Assistant Pledge Master, Worked on the IFC Concert programs at Cole Field House, Contributed many hours to the Homecoming Float construction and Greek Week support activities, End of school year and summer maintenance staff, Personally updated house bathroom sinks, House Corporation Member 10 years and Coordinated the 50th Reunion of Maryland Alpha graduates.
Michael Twigg ’74
Brother Twigg retired in 2013 after a 39 year career in mortgage banking with the last 26 years in executive administration. Married Sandra West Twigg (Alpa Phi, Maryland 1983) in 1987. Father, Pete Twigg , was a Phi Delt from Maryland and spent his entire career at the University retiring as Chairman of the Department of Horticulture. His father received his BS, Masters, and PhD from Maryland. Mike’s mother and sister were Tri Delts and his brother was also a Phi Delt at Maryland. Mike is still active on campus and the community of College Park currently serving as Treasurer of the Board of Visitors at the School of Music and President of the Rotary Club of College Park.
Contributions to Chapter: Served as the Chapter Adviser from 1976 – 1987 and served as Province President of the Gamma South Province (chapters in Maryland and Pennsylvania) of Phi Delta Theta from 1989 – 1995.
Chris Washburn ’93
Brother Washburn is employed as the Area Manager for Caliber Home Loans which is annually recognized as one of the top mortgage bankers in the country. He reside in Gambrills, Maryland and enjoy spending time with his twin daughters.
Contributions to Chapter: Chapter President, Rush Chairman, Outstanding Pledge, Instrumental in the Fraternity House Renovation Project, Housing Corporation President and Member and a participate in Fraternity fund raising events.
Adam Luecking ’01
Brother Luecking, CEO of Results Leadership Group, is also the past President of the Community Indicators Consortium and has recently served as a Senior Fellow at University of Maryland (UMD) Burns Academy of Leadership. He manages executive leadership programs, consulting services and technology deployment to agencies that serve children, families and communities. Luecking is the author of the book, The Holy Grail of Public Leadership: And the Never-Ending Quest for Measurable Impact.” He has contributed to numerous articles on Results-Based Accountability™ (RBA) and related topics. Luecking also recently led the creation of the Results Scorecard, web-based software for RBA, that helps leaders in the public and nonprofit sectors accelerate the improvement of the quality of life in their communities and the performance of their agencies and programs. Luecking and his wife, Erin, have three sons.
Contributions to Chatper: Chapter President for two terms, Leadership Consultant for Phi Delta Theta General Headquarters, Chapter Advisory Board for 12 years, House Corporation President and Member for over 10 years, House Corporation President of the Year 2013, Chapter President of the Year 2000 and organized the 75th and 80th anniversaries.
The University erected a garden on Fraternity Row which included bricks engraved with each honorees name to signify their contributions and accomplishments to the Maryland Greek community. At the ceremony, each member was presented with a small replica of their brick. The Phi Delt honorees in attendance at the event were Bob “Turtle” Smith, Robert “Bob” A. Gale, Michael Twigg, Chris Washburn, Adam Luecking, and Carol Perry on behalf of her deceased husband, Marv Perry.
