Utah Alpha alumnus, and prominent California artist, Terrence Martin (Utah ’94) was recently commissioned by the PAC-12 and Big Ten Conferences to create a sculpture for the conferences to present as a gift to the Rose Bowl and Tournament of Roses on its 100th Anniversary which takes place on New Year’s Day.
The Big Ten and Pac-12 issued a formal resolution of congratulations to the Tournament of Roses as it prepares for the 100th Rose Bowl Game. Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany, Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott, Michigan State President Lou Anna K. Simon and Oregon State President Ed Ray presented the resolution at a reception hosted by Tournament of Roses President Scott Jenkins and Rose Bowl Management Committee Chair Libby Wright.
“With the 100th Rose Bowl Game just days away, the Big Ten Conference and the Council of Presidents/Chancellors is pleased to congratulate the Tournament of Roses on creating and maintaining an enduring American tradition,” said Delany. “We are honored to have played in the first Rose Bowl Game in 1902, proud of our long-term affiliation with The Granddaddy of Them All that began in 1946 and looking forward to a bright future in Pasadena.’”
In addition to the resolution, the Big Ten and Pac-12 commissioned the sculpture by Brother Martin entitled “100 Games and Counting.” The piece is designed to pay tribute to the iconic game and all that it has represented for the universities and the world of sports. The sculpture is made entirely out of hand formed steel and will be displayed in the Tournament House in Pasadena. The sculpture includes 24K gold plated petals and chrome and weighs 80 lbs. It was unveiled earlier this week at a special Rose Bowl VIP event in Pasadena and will become a permanent part of the Tournament of Roses House collection.
Brother Martin is the President & CEO of Jagged Edge Metal Art in Sacramento and has created many prominent public and private sculptures throughout the country. Martin will also be creating and donating a commemorative wall sculpture for the Utah Alpha chapter house at the University of Utah to commemorate his chapter’s upcoming Centennial in March, 2014.
