After being claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills, Kentucky Alpha-Delta (Centre) Phi Jordan Gay made the team’s 53-man active roster.
Gay went to training camp with the Carolina Panthers, but was released after seeing action in three preseason games with the team, averaging 35.3 yards per punt and handling kickoff duties. Despite Gay having just a few days of practice and one final preseason game with the Bills, the club saw enough to keep him on the roster after the final cut.
After bringing in Gay, the Bills cut veteran punter Brian Moorman on Friday. Though the Bills also signed Colton Schmidt, who punted for the 49ers in the preseason, both have made the 53-man roster. It remains to be seen whether Gay will be utilized as a punter or kickoff specialist, though he is listed on the Bills’ depth chart as the first team punter and holder, with Schmidt being listed as a kicker.
Gay received his NFL opportunity after starring for three years at Centre, earning conference special teams player of the year honors all three years. He was also selected as an All-American in 2012.
Gay signed with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent after the 2013 NFL Draft and spent the 2013 preseason with the Panthers. He spent a brief time with the New York Giants in the offseason before joining the Panthers again coming into the 2014 preseason.
